“Re humaari choriya choro se kamm hai ke?”– Mahavir Singh Phogat

An inspiring film with perfection at every aspect in its making be it acting, direction or cinematography. This is a biopic based on the journey of Mahavir Singh Phogat who taught wrestling to his daughters Geeta Phogat and Babita Kumari. The former is India's first female wrestler to win at the 2010 Commonwealth Games, where she won the gold medal (55 kg). Later her sister Babita Kumari won the silver (51 kg).

However the story might seem simple, but the journey wasn’t and this is beautifully portrayed on the screen by Nitesh Tiwari (Director). The film starts off with the dream of a father (who was a former national wrestling champion) of having a son as he wanted him to win an international gold medal in wrestling for India. The sad part is Mahavir ended up having four kids and all four were daughters and with the fourth daughter he had lost all his hopes of winning a gold medal.

One fine day when a neighbor came to their house complaining about how brutally Mahavir’s daughters had thrashed their sons, made him realize that the importance of a gold medal remains the same whether it is won by a son or a daughter and all his life he was worried about producing a son and then winning a gold medal for India. This realization of Mahavir changed the life of Geeta and Babita completely.

The transition of two weak and playful daughters to strong and international champions was a difficult one.

Right from the early morning exercise then from being teased in school to sacrificing their most loved spicy food to only eating vegetables and chicken is shown very smartly by the director and is portrayed beautifully by the cinematographer. Talking about the background score, it fits well and the music composer Pritam has tried to keep the songs desi and strong.

The hardships faced by Mahavir to make his daughters good wrestlers can be deeply felt and can leave you moved while watching the film, thanks to Aamir Khan’s acting skills. Sakshi Tanwar as mother has done a very good job and deserves appraisal. Fatima Sana Sheik, Sanya Malhotra, Zaira Wasim and Suhani Bhatnagar as daughters have done fairly well and have done justice to their respected roles.

Go and watch Dangal for its amazing story and exceptionally well executed acting skills. This story is a perfect film to end the year inspired and joyfully.
